Melbourne painting guide

Can you paint over mould on walls or ceilings?

Simply covering visible mould with paint is usually the wrong sequence. The moisture cause and surface condition matter more than the final coat.

Paint does not fix active moisture

If a roof leak, plumbing issue, failed waterproofing, condensation problem or another defect is keeping the substrate damp, repainting alone will not solve the cause.

Why mould returns after painting

Recurring staining can happen when the underlying moisture condition remains, the surface was not adequately cleaned or dried, or unstable coatings were painted over.

What should happen before repainting?

The cause should be identified and addressed where necessary. The affected surface then needs to be suitable for painting: clean, dry and stable, with loose coating removed and repairs or priming completed as required.

When a painter is not the first trade you need

Active leaks, significant hidden mould, structural damp, waterproofing failure or extensive contaminated material can require another qualified trade or specialist before painting.

What repainting can do

Once the substrate is suitable, repainting can restore a consistent finish to walls and ceilings and blend repaired areas with the surrounding room.

Common Melbourne locations

Bathrooms, laundries, bedrooms, ceiling corners and colder external-wall areas are common places where customers notice mould staining or condensation-related marks.
